As I wrote in the last review, earlier this week we got to try a few new rums at the newly opened Zombie Village bar in San Francisco. The Worthy Park 2007 is also a Habitation Velier rum, but one which interestingly Worthy Park was ok with going out directly with their brand on the bottle. The rum is actually a little younger than its brother bottle, so we were eager to compare in a vertical tasting. The 2007 is lower ester vs. the 2005, and definitely lower than the Hampden, so it made for an interesting comparison.
Worthy Park is one of Jamaica’s oldest distilleries, though it was mothballed from the 60s until 2005 when it was reopened as a modern distillery. Since then they’ve been churning out interesting rums of varying degrees of funkiness under a variety of different brands.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Aggressively honey, butterscotch, nutty, refined caramel extract, kavalan, dark mahogany, espresso and jasmine.
Palate: Hawaiian macademia nuts. Softness of caramel and vanilla then caramel dark chocolate. Alternating waves of ester and oak.
Finish: Brown sugar and honey.
Overall: A lovely, complex and layered dram that’s full of bright Jamaican flavor. Highly recommend you give this one a try.
