We came across the Peat’s Beast whisky while travelling in Barcelona at the bar La Whiskeria. My wife is always up for anything new that is peated that she hasn’t tried, and the monster on the label jumped out at the bar. It’s a cask-strength single malt from Islay, but the bartender told us that the label refuses to disclose the distillery and it’s a closely guarded secret. There were three options on the menu, and we went with the PX sherry wood finish (I think it was around 12 euros/pour, which was quite reasonable).
The smokiness of the whisky is definitely on the damp seaweed side rather than the BBQ of a Caol Ila – perhaps Laphroaig or an Ardbeg?
Tasting Notes
Nose: Burnt rubber, raisin, tar, coconut cream, chocolate, black cherry coke.
Palate: Rubbery, hot, rich coal smoke, potassium. Ripples of sweet damp fall leaves, charred vanilla, oily mouth feel. Some cinnamon. With water it opens up into coconut, vanilla, and toasted oak.
Hot aftertaste. Some salty dry smoke and more rubber.
Summary
