Mundo Perdido Cocktail

It’s no secret that we’re huge fans of Smugglers’ Cove. Our names are even displayed in the doorway of the bar as a testament to how many rums we have imbibed there.

The coronavirus pandemic has brought the fun to a screeching halt. Today, the San Francisco mayor London Breed delayed the planned outdoor bar and indoor restaurant openings further, based on the recent spike of coronavirus cases in San Francisco. With those openings (indoor bars did not make the list) were delayed, the opening of indoor bars seems to have shrunk even further out of grasp. To be perfectly frank, it’s the right decision for public health – and that’s coming from a bar enthusiast. But I’m also worried for the future of many SF bars and businesses.

To remind ourselves of the good-old-days, we busted out the Smugglers’ Cove book and set about making recipes. We did not have grenadine or juices (e.g. pineapple) on hand, which limited the number of drinks that could be made.

The “Mundo Perdido” (lost world) looked perfect, however. It was made exclusively for Smuggler’s Cove by the famous tiki legend Jeff “Beachbum” Berry. It’s not overly sweet – but has a beautiful balance of sour, sweet, and a healthy dose of booze.
