It doesn’t rain much in San Francisco (#drought). But when it does, we have a perfect excuse to sit at home and drink the gloom away!
You may well know our stance on St. George’s: it’s one of the best damn independent distilleries in California. Also, the world. We more recently came across a bottle of their their Faultline Gin, a collaboration with K&L, one of the best spirit shops in the world.
St. Georges has three primary gins, the Terroir, the Botanivore, and the Dry Rye, and the Faultline is delightfully different. The Terroir is “foresty” and reminds you of hiking through the woods in California on a rainy day. The Botanivore is full of a multitude of gin botanical flavors, and the Dry Rye is almost whiskey-like in nature. Faultline is different. It’s a little salty, and almost tropical.
Due to its tropical nature, we experimented with some tiki flavors with the gin. John D. Taylor’s velvet falernum is a mainstay in tiki drinks and features a coterie of tropical flavors, like lime, clove, ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg.
We then added a tiny touch of St. George’s NOLA Coffee Liquor. It’s tricky to use in cocktails, as it can easily overwhelm other ingredients but it’s been a recent favorite ingredient. If you don’t want your drink to taste like Starbucks, stay under .25 oz in a regularly proportioned drink.
After a bit of experimenting, we present… The Aftershock, with Faultline Gin, Velvet Falernum, a touch of NOLA Coffee Liquor, and a big splash of lemon juice for a potent tiki cocktail.
A toast to the rainy days!
