Redshift Cocktail

One high risk maneuver is clicking around on liquor.com for cocktail recipes and making whatever you land upon. There are some gems on there and there are the… not so great ones.

But when I came across a cocktail named “Hubble’s Law“, the nerd in me had to create it. Hubble’s Law is the well-known observation by Edwin Hubble in 1929 of the redshift of all distant galaxies, thus confirming the theory by Alexander Friedmann (who based his equations on Einstein’s general relativity laws) that the universe was indeed expanding. Fun fact: this is widely regarded as one of Einstein’s biggest blunders; his equations naturally lead to the conclusion that the universe was expanding but he stubbornly did not believe this and even created a fake constant to ensure the universe stayed constant in size. Unfortunately, the Drink.com recipe does not go much into the details behind the name.

The drink pictured on the page appears very green, but mine ended up reddish, mostly because we bought some blackberries in the farmer’s market and ended up creating a blackberry simple in place of the original’s call for a brown sugar simple.

We also used Nemiroff honey vodka, which added a layer of flavor to the cocktail instead of unflavored vodka. The honey vodka is a slight hint (unlike the flavored artificial-tasting abominations on the market) and we quite enjoy it.

The Redshift – a spin on the Hubble’s Law

Ingredients

  • 2 oz vodka (Nemiroff honey)
  • 0.75 oz fresh lime juice
  • 0.5 oz Amaro Montenegro
  • 0.5 oz blackberry simple syrup (see below)

Glass

Cocktail Glass

Instructions

  • Make blackberry simple syrup by muddling 5 blackberries, topping with a quarter cup of brown sugar, and a quarter cup of hot water in a mason jar.
  • Shake vigorously, then strain a few times to remove sediment. This keeps for up to a week in the fridge, or up to a month if you add in a quarter ounce of vodka.
  • Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker with ice.
  • Stir and strain.
