Bananarac Cocktail

One thing I sometimes fantasize about is doing the Julie & Julia version of cocktails. To be honest, I have never watched the movie, but I know the gist of it: some girl named Julie recreates all of Julia Child’s recipes and achieves nirvana through doing so. If I were to do this, I’d probably choose the Death & Co cocktail book, which is seen as a bit of a bible in the cocktail world.

We bought the book a while ago, but I have no idea where it went. Okay scratch that. I just found it as soon as I typed that sentence. It’s not so hard to find things when you live in a small San Francisco apartment.

At any rate, before I found said book, I sometimes glance at Instagram or the world wide web for ideas. One of the mixologists I follow had posted the Bananarac, which was 100% up our alley. Booze-forward (1 oz of Rye and 1 oz of Cognac), with some Giffard’s Banana Liqueur, which if you have been following our articles, is something we have that we spend a lot of calories trying to figure out how to use. The drink itself is probably what I enjoy even more than the Sazerac, which I venerate.

In front (in the swan): the Bananarac. In the back: a negroni variant because I wanted more than just one drink.

Ingredients

  • 1 oz Cognac
  • 1 oz Rye
  • 0.5 oz Giffard
  • 1 barspoon gum syrup (I used simple)
  • Rinse of absinth

Glass

Cocktail Glass (or swan glass!)

Instructions

  • Rinse a cocktail glass with absinthe. If it is a silly swan glass, this may be more difficult.
  • Add the ingredients to a mixing glass with ice
  • Stir and strain into the rinsed glass
  • Drink it and follow it up with a negroni
