Foxy Bay

Created for Mixology Monday’s dry cocktails week, the Foxy Bay is a dry vodka sakitini made from San Francisco bay area booze.

Ice Fox vodka hails from Treasure Island, a tiny strip of low lying land tethered to San Francisco and Oakland by the Bay Bridge. The sleepy island offers boasts beautiful views of San Francisco, and is home to Ice Fox, a small vodka distillery. Ice Fox starts with fermented midewestern corn. The vodka is triple distilled in a copper still, and mixed with water from the Sierra Nevada. It’s generally creamy and light, and is a solid value, retailing for $20 for a 750 ML bottle.

Owned by the massive Japanese Sake distillery Takara sake, Sho Chiku Bai is a Berkeley institution, brewing a range of sakes since the 1980s. Sho Chiku Bai nama junmai sake is “draft style,” i.e. it’s not pasteurized, but its filtered, so it’s not as sweet as a nigori sake. It’s relatively light and fruity. Like Ice Fox it’s very inexpensive. A bottle will run you under $3. The Sho Chiku Bai distillery is worth a visit if you’re in San Francisco. They have a great tour and an overview of historical sake brewing.
