Review #79: Dalmore King Alexander III

On our recent visit to Barcelona we stopped by La Whiskeria and went through a few tastings. We liked the bar so much we revisited a second night, took out our papers and pens, and reviewed a few drams.

We started with the Dalmore King Alexander 3, which is aged in 6 different types of barrel (getting a little excessive guys). The list includes ex-bourbon (of course), but also Marsala, Madeira, Cab Sauvignon, and oloroso and port casks to round things out at a nice half dozen.

So far we’ve been happy with Dalmore’s premium-priced, non age statement (NAS) line, including their Cigar Malt, so we thought this would be worth a try.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Raisin, toffee, but subtle. Vanilla, caramel, red apple candies. White chocolate. Really delicious smelling.

Palate: Warm and inviting on first sip. Feels silky. Vanilla, some oak and wood, caramel with a hint of Christmas cake. Resinous sap, oak, caramel and dried plums. Waxy, oily mouth feel.
Long oaky finish, quite tannic and some cocoa powder at the end.

Overall: 8/10. Very (very very) drinkable but a bit unchallenging.

About Dalmore

  • Dalmore is located in the Highlands, 20 miles North of Inverness (which is right next to Loch Ness).
  • Dalmore was started in 1839, and generally was in operation until the early 1917 when it was destroyed by a naval mine explosion (!) when the Royal Navy tested mines near the distillery.
  • The distillery was bought in the 1960s by Whtyte & Mackay.
  • Famous for their heavily sherried, dark colored malts.

  • Good for the money. It's definitely worth the extra £20 to get the fantastic 21 year aged Chivas Royal Salute.
