Review #120: Plantation Panama Old Reserve

Getting ready to move from Oakland back to San Francisco, so I’m eyeing up and knocking off some nearly-empty bottles so that I have less crap to carry over the bay. Today I’m going back to Plantation, this time to Panama, with the Plantation Old Reserve 2002.

• ABV: 42%
• Aged for 10 years in ex-bourbon casks, probably finished for at least a year in ex-Cognac from the taste, and because, well, Plantation.

About Plantation

• Alexandre Gabriel is the president and owner of Maison Ferrand and was also the originator of their rum line (Plantation).
• Plantation tend to age spirit in the tropics before returning it to France for cask finishing. They often incorporate some interesting finishes like Cognac casks.
• For Plantation, Alexandre spends several months of the year in the Caribbean sourcing rum from local producers to be sold under the Plantation label.
