Review #77: Glendronach 21 Parliament

The Glendronach distillery located in the Spey, in Forgue by the Huntly. The distillery is situated within a beautiful Victorian building, just off the B9001. The distillery hails back to the 1820s, but like many, it fell silent in the 1990s. A few years ago, along with BenRiach and Glenglassaugh, the distillery was bought by Brown, the international spirits company. Brown Forman sold off Southern Comfort a month earlier to pay for the new acquisition. Good trade!

Glendronach 21 is the top of the distillery’s core range. The spirit is aged in a combination of Pedro Ximenez (PX) and Oloroso sherry casks, and is a wondrous dram for sherry lovers like me.

Why the name? The spirit is named after the group of Rook birds, a whole “parliament” of them, that live in the trees near the distillery for the last 200 years.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Plum, dried figs, honey and malt, apple and toast. Wonderfully decadent and sweet. Maple syrup, lemon candy, caramelized wood, and powdered sugar.

Palate: Ripe fruits, oranges, floral, overlaid on a background of dark prunes. It feels very “layered”. Unmistakable sherried plums on the mid palate. Chocolatey, creamy, and extremely rich mouth feel.

Finish: Layers of laquered wood and sherry alternating. Rich tannic finish.

Summary

Overall: 8.5/10. Exquisite

Bought for: $190 at the Whisky Shop
