Black Walnut Manhattan
On a trip to Austria a year or two ago we got a bottle of Golles Edelbitter, a 30% ABV Austrian Amaro. Golles is wonderful stuff. On the nose it’s full of coffee and chocolate. Mid palate it’s heavy notes of dark chocolate and walnuts. Not too sweet, not overwhelmingly bitter. We put it on the shelf, and sort of forgot about it. There weren’t a lot of cocktails we found on the internet referencing it, which is sort of surprising. The official site suggests “serving the required quantity of precious bitter in a tumbler with ice,” not exactly the most visionary combination.
I came home in the mood for a Black Walnut Manhattan and for some reason remember that we had this on the shelf. We set to work, and found that it went really well with the 2Bar bourbon we picked up in Seattle. Wonderful combo and didn’t need any vermouth.
